The upgrade of an item lets players boost an item's gear rating up 700 points and also add a bonus. Items can be upgraded by keeping them in inventory, and then taking them to the kiln.

Certain items are worth upgrading because of their distinctive stats. (For example an excellently broken point armor that is rolled can be used in melee PvP). Other items such as weapons don't change much after an upgrade, and aren't worth the cost.

Weapons

The upgrade template of a weapon will show the new stats that it will gain when upgrading, along with the values of these stats. This means that an upgrade from a sword that has 8 damage to an 11-attack-damage sword will result in a weapon receiving 33% attack damage. However the 3% does not mean that it will hit 3 times less often because it's an absolute number.

A weapon can also be rerolled using the green button that has circular arrows within the menu for items. This will reroll an item and change its statistics, but it will not reset the weapon's levels or connect it to an account's status.

Armor

A few armor upgrades can make all the difference to your survivability. Certain sets provide massive boosts to poison, curse, fire and magic resistance, which can make it easier to navigate through tough terrain. In general, the greater defense you have on your character, the more health you will get from each point. So, it's best to upgrade your armor.

To upgrade your armor, go to any of the Great Fairy Fountains in the game. There are four of them, and each requires you to complete a specific side quest that involves the Stable Trotters musical troupe. After you've completed the main side quest and have completed the corresponding fountain you'll be able to speak to any Great Fairy to open up the armor upgrade menu.

The amount of materials required to upgrade each piece of armor will differ. In general, you'll be looking at anything from three to ten Red Chuchu jellies and 10 Rupees for the initial upgrade, and anywhere between five Rubies and 10 Fire-Breath Lizalfos Horns for each subsequent one. For instance the Champion Leathers can be upgraded to +5 defense, allowing you to keep pace with a large group of enemies in the majority of cold climates and the Snowquill Headdress can be upgraded up to +20 defense, granting you enough protection to withstand a full on raid with a few of your friends.

Note that armor can't be upgraded the same way as weapons, so you'll have to concentrate on upgrading it to gain physical power if you're Warrior or Spell Power in the case of Mage. It is also recommended to save your armor upgrades to upgrade the armor you'll still wear by the end of the story, such as the Ring of Lightning, Spectral Shield or the mask you use in the final boss fight the Monter Parts Merchant Mask.

You can also gain advantages to your armor by giving the jeweler in Gerudo Town 10 Twinkling Titanite. Generally speaking, you'll want to keep these upgrades for the weapon you'll use to win the game such as the Longsword, Battleaxe or Warhammer, but it can be useful to have some improvements to the chest armor and helmets that let you stealthy battle certain monsters.

Potions

Potions are liquids that when consumed by the player, provide a temporary effect for a short period of time. There are five different types of potions, each with specific effects and durations. Some potions can be upgraded to increase their level of effectiveness. In addition the effects of some potions can be enhanced by adding redstone or glowstone dust to the potions.

Potion upgrades require a certain amount of XP. This can be obtained through crafting them on a table or by placing them in the Alchemist chest. However, the cost of upgrading will vary based on the kind of potion you wish to upgrade, as well as on the item's Mark Level and Rarity.

However, a re-upgrade will destroy the old trinket until it is salvaged using a Black Lion Salvage Kit or an alternative salvage tool that is higher-end. Upgrades to trinkets are more expensive than other upgrades, but still less expensive than buying new ones.
